2013 JudgesMatthew LillardMatthew Lillard is an actor, director and producer. He is best known for his roles as Stu Macher in Scream, Shaggy in the Scooby-Doo film series, and his dramatic turn in Alexander Payne’s acclaimed The Descendants. Matthew’s directorial debut Fat Kid Rules the World, funded via Kickstarter, premiered at the SXSW in 2012, where it won the Audience Award.
Matthew adds both star power and a rare knowledge of independent film distribution to the CFC. Filmmakers are given a rare chance to meet and learn from not only a veteran Hollywood insider, but a fellow filmmaker on the cutting edge of getting independent projects off the ground. |
Kurt LoderKurt Loder is a legendary Film critic and a television personality. To the audience, he is perhaps the most recognizable judge due to his career with MTV. To the Filmmakers, he is a daunting critic whose validation is hard-earned but always well-deserved.
Kurt Loder is a film critic, author, columnist, and sometime television presence. He spent most of the 1980s as a senior editor at Rolling Stone, and then all of the 1990s at MTV, where he hosted The Week in Rock. He has appeared as himself in a number of movies, most of them bad. He also once appeared, in cartoon form, on The Simpsons – a career highlight. His third book, The Good, the Bad and the Godawful, a collection of seven years’ worth of movie reviews, was published by St. Martin’s Press. |
Peter BaxterPeter Baxter is President and co-founder of Slamdance, a film festival and showcase for emerging talent. Slamdance’s alumni include Christopher Nolan, Marc Foster, Jared Hess, and Oren Peli, all of whom first gained notice there. Since its inception, Peter has developed and managed all areas of Slamdance, including the introduction of Slamdance Studios. Peter is currently working on two feature length documentaries.
To the filmmakers, a chance to have their work seen by Peter Baxter is a huge potential career boost. As the head of one of the most respected film talent incubators in the world, his presence grows the CFC’s image as a career stepping stone for young filmmakers. |
Melody joined The Collective in Beverly Hills as a manager/producer in 2010. Before that, she co-founded Adept Entertainment alongside business partner Abbey Robertson, where they managed a roster of comedians, actors, and writers, produced stand-up shows in and around Los Angeles, and helped produce the industry-leading Bridgetown Comedy Festival in Portland, Oregon. She works primarily with writers and creators developing projects for television, film, and the web, in addition to working with stand-up comics.

Andrew began his Hollywood career at Evolution Management, where he was instrumental in shepherding the ultra-successful horror franchise SAW to the big screen—he took the credit of Consigliere for the first film. During his 11-year stint at Evolution, Andrew began managing high profile clients such as horror/fantasy legend Clive Barker and filmmaker Darren Lynn Bousman, whose collective worldwide 8ilm grosses equal nearly half of a billion dollars. Wilson also developed, packaged and produced Lottery Ticket starring Ice Cube for Warner Brothers while at Evolution, before moving on to the next phase of his career. Andrew joined the already successful Zero Gravity team in Spring 2012 and continues to represent some of the most exciting writers and directors in the industry with an eye towards furthering his efforts as a producer under the Zero Gravity banner.

Bethany is a filmmaker who won both the Jury and Audience Awards at last year’s CFC for her film Winner, earning her a seat on this year’s judges’ panel. Her short films have won praise from Werner Herzog and King of Queens creator Michael J. Weithorn, among others. Bethany is currently working on her feature directorial debut, set to be filmed in 2014.
To the filmmakers, she represents someone who knows the CFC inside and out, and can offer insight directly related to her experience. Since she has progressed from the CFC to her own feature, she demonstrates the opportunity entering the CFC provides. |
